Nash County is the eastern edge of where we work, past Zebulon and out toward Spring Hope, Bailey, Middlesex and Nashville. It is a long way from the middle of the Triangle, and it is inside our service area all the same. We serve the Triangle and the surrounding counties, and this is one of them.
The land flattens and the soil gets sandier as you head east, and many wells out here are shallow. Shallow, sandy wells have their own habits, so we ask three questions before we drive out.
Two things follow from sandy ground. Water moves through it quickly and tends to arrive at the well on the acidic side, and fine sand comes along for the ride.
A shallow well is also closer to the surface and whatever is on it, which is why bacteria testing deserves more attention here. That is a lab test, and the county health department is the place to ask about one.
Iron and hardness appear too, though not on every well. The free in-home test reads hardness, iron and pH at your sink, and the results decide what, if anything, we recommend.

You may not know, and that is fine. Age and depth tell us how much weight to put on sediment and bacteria. An older, shallow well gets a Pre-Sediment Filter at the front and, where a lab result calls for it, a UV purifier at the end, after the water is clear.
Blue-green staining means acidic water is working on the copper. A Calcite Neutralizer corrects inlet pH between 5.0 and 7.0. It adds calcium in the process, so hardness may rise and a softener after it is often recommended.
In the towns the water is municipal, treated and chlorinated. Those homes need a carbon filter for taste and smell, not a well system, and we will tell you which kind of home yours is.

It corrects acidic water. Low pH is common in NC well water, and acidic water slowly eats copper plumbing — the telltale sign is blue-green staining in sinks and tubs. A calcite neutralizer runs your water through crushed calcium carbonate, which raises the pH back to neutral. If your well tests acidic (the neutralizer is rated for inlet pH 5.0 to 7.0), this usually has to be handled before anything else.
Mostly when you’re on a private well and bacteria is a concern. UV light neutralizes 99.9% of bacteria and microorganisms without adding anything to the water. It’s an add-on at $400 installed, it needs clear water to work — sediment has to be filtered out ahead of it — and the bulb is replaced once a year. City water is already disinfected before it reaches you, so there it is extra assurance rather than a need.
On a well, almost always. Sand, silt and grit will shorten the life of every piece of equipment downstream of it, including your pump and your pressure tank. On city water it’s rarely necessary unless you’re on an older line or there’s been recent main work.
Yes, and it's a meaningful share of what we do. Wells in Wake, Harnett, Chatham and Johnston counties commonly come back with iron, hydrogen sulfide, sediment or low pH. Those need genuinely different equipment than a city water home — which is why we test first instead of quoting off a price list.
